Author Pooja Makhijani has started a bibliography on the subject of South Asia and the South Asian Diaspora in Children's Literature. This list is a terrific resource for librarians.
I am intrigued with her new book, Mama's Saris. I recently had an occassion to visit a store that sold saris and fabric. The colors and textures were extraordinary. We wanted to pick out some fabric but found choosing almost impossible. As the fabrics unfurled, the colors and metallics fell into glowing swags and ripples across the tables. I do not think I ever fully appreciated the term "riot of color" until that visit.

That is an excellent site, isn't it? I was just using Pooja's reference list last night to remember a name I'd forgotten.
Camille, I think you would like Monsoon Summer, too. (by Mitali Perkins) The book will have you wanting not only saris but also some salwar kameez (a kind of lovely outfit with pants). I know I do.
Have you read Shiva's Fire? The descriptions of the dance outfits were gorgeous. Thanks for the tip on Monsoon Summer.
Camille,
Mitali's previous novel, THE NOT-SO STAR-SPANGLED LIFE OF SUNITA SEN, has a delightful scene towards the end with lots and lots of Indian clothes. You should definitely check out Mitali's work... soon :).
And thanks for the link!
Pooja
