The word moot is an archaic term meaning "argue, debate, discuss." In early English history, a moot was a meeting to discuss local affairs. Moot comes from the Old English gemot, meaning "meeting."
It's always nice to see smart people and intelligent socializing, though were I a librarian I might not find it so amusing that the NYT is getting all twitterpated that (Gasp!) someone doesn't fit an antiquated stereotype. Of course, it IS in the Fashion & Style section...

I loved the name of their group, "Desk Set."
The stereotype will ever be with us though. Google alerts for "librarian" result in a very high percentage of articles that include the word,"shush."
