Movie: City of Ember

This could be fun:

Bill Murray will star in a film adaptation of Jeanne DuPrau's YA novel City of Ember, to be directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House) and written by Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands, The Secret Garden and Corpse Bride). Murray will play the Mayor of Ember. Production begins in Belfast this summer, with an October 2008 release date planned. Playtone and Walden Media will co-produce.

OH my gosh.
LOVE for the book. And so much fear for the idea of a movie... but it's the kind of book that has lots of stuff that can be interpreted without ruining the central theme. How cool. And Bill Murray!? Wow.

I think Murray is an inspired choice for the corrupt politician/mayor. They will need strong leads for the kids to balance him though.

Very cool. But I confess I'm a little puzzled how playing the Mayor of Ember is "starring" in the film. While the Mayor is important to the story, I don't think he really has a very big part personally, unless they've beefed up the part quite a bit.

I loved the book, too, but I always fear when I hear that they're making a movie out of a book I loved.

Murray has been in more ensemble movies recently, can't think of the one that was filmed in Houston...it was a offbeat school story...and then in the Japan one (having mental blocks about the titles) he was low key. I agree, I hope they can keep the focus on the kids and the story. He could be overwhelming...
