The word moot is an archaic term meaning "argue, debate, discuss." In early English history, a moot was a meeting to discuss local affairs. Moot comes from the Old English gemot, meaning "meeting."
I've heard Jack speak several times at children's literature conferences and twice at our local reading council membership dinners. He's great--and he's just as funny as a stand-up comedian.
