The word moot is an archaic term meaning "argue, debate, discuss." In early English history, a moot was a meeting to discuss local affairs. Moot comes from the Old English gemot, meaning "meeting."

Speaking of Tolkien...
LOTR fans have probably already seen this Stephen Colbert bit following June 6, 2006.
I've a friend who had a birthday party with one of the Colbert writers. They guy told us that Stephen is actually a HUGE LOTR fan. As, I'm sure, this link proves.
Colbert rocks. Enough said. :)
